Welcome to CSS and the Ralph Bunche Building

CSS

CSS is a relatively new arrival to our historic building, which was first occupied in 1922 as an experimental school affiliated with Teachers College. We’ve been here since 2007, currently sharing the building with PS125, KIPP STAR Charter Middle School, and the Harlem Renaissance Training Center. Your PTA is striving to document the various ways that the school building needs to be improved to make it a smoothly operating, top-notch campus for our entire community AND support the Science, Technology, Engineering & Math curriculum that is the founding basis for our school.

With so many occupants, it can be a tight fit. But even so, in recent years, a number of improvements were made to the building and CSS’s spaces within it:

  • Laboratory upgrades for the science curriculum
  • Air conditioning within every CSS classroom
  • A building-wide plumbing upgrade, including bathroom and locker room renovations, drinking fountain replacement, and pool area restoration
  • Renovations to the building Auditorium and its sound system, funded by grants from the offices of Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and City Council Member Mark Levine
  • Improvements to the Gyms and gym equipment to allow more PSAL activities to happen at the school—paid directly from parent-raised PTA funds

We are looking forward to additional improvements in the coming year, based on some approvals won in the last few months:

  • Renovations to the cafeterias and school kitchen
  • Installing turf at the school playground, funded by a Participatory Budgeting proposal created by CSS students

There will certainly be more to come!

FACILITIES COMMENT FORM: If you see something about our facility that you want to bring to the PTA's attention, good or bad, there are a number of ways to let us know – reach out to Facilities Committee members Kevin Daly or Gregory Morris, approach a member of the Executive Board at a meeting, or leave a comment with the Parent Coordinator (who will pass on the appropriate stuff to us). You can also leave a comment in the form below.

TEACHERS and STAFF: If you prefer, please download the .pdf version of a DOE Request for Repairs form and fill it out. A version with fillable form fields which can be completed on-screen, and a version to be printed and filled out manually is available. Send the completed form to the Facilities Committee (below) and/or return to the building Custodian. The PTA will follow up on your behalf if you let us know!

Yours in CSS Pride,

Current Updates:
DOE representatives have been starting the design process for two significant renovations at the school: upgrades to the kitchen and cafeterias, and repairs to or replacement of the slate roofs. We will be communicating regularly with Principal Nightengale and the building’s custodian to learn about progress on these important projects and to share them with the PTA.
